Imiola Congregational Church, was a big part of my dad’s upbringing. The hale pule founded by Rev. Lorenzo Lyons in 1835. Makua Laiana as he was fondly called and remembered, penned Hawai’I Aloha and established churches in Kawaihae, Puako and Waimanu Valley. Imiola is located in the northeast corner of Waimea’s famous church row. Imiola played a huge part in instilling the values of Aloha ke Akua, aloha I ke kahi I ke kahi, aloha ‘aina, kuleana, ho’olohe, kulia ika nu’u, pono and much else in him. Values he has passed on to me. And, I am passing on to my keiki. He has memories of both he and my Uncle Bob being led by their ears from the back of the church to the front pew. The outcome, greatly improved their listening skills. As added value. It brought them closer to Akua.
